Privacy Policy

Updated: 20th September 2024

Introduction

This privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) describes how the Ashigaru Open Source Project (“Ashigaru”, “the Project”, “we”, “us” or “our”) collects, uses, and discloses, transfers, and otherwise processes and handles (collectively, “Processes”) your personal data.

By accessing or using our websites, application or services, or otherwise interacting with us, you are deemed to have read, understood and agreed to our Processing of your personal data as outlined in this Privacy Policy. This website contains links to a number of other websites. The privacy policies and procedures described here do not apply to those sites; we suggest contacting those websites directly for information on their data collection and distribution policies.

Services we operate

Information we collect

We may use small files called cookies which are sent to your web browser and stored on your device. If you do not want cookies to be placed on your device, then they can be disabled in your web browser. However, please note that disabling cookies in your browser may prevent this website from working correctly. We may use third party DDOS protection services and they may also use cookies to deliver their services.

When you visit our website, although we have a policy of no logging, we may capture information relating to your IP address, the time and duration of your visit, and the time and duration of the pages on our website you view, information about your computer system, such as your browser type and operating system. Accessing our websites via the Tor Browser is recommended to minimise the information you disclose.

Information we never receive nor collect

Usage Data (including the date and time at which you use an application, the duration of using it, and other ‘metadata’) is NOT collected by Ashigaru through the usage of the application. All requests made by the application to our websites and services are via the Tor network so we are unable to log your IP address.

Your private keys, mnemonic, passphrase, recovery file, and wallet passcode are your own responsibility. This data is not received, collected, or stored by Ashigaru at any time, for any reason. As the application requires a server to interact with the Bitcoin network and we do not host one for you to connect to, we do NOT have access to your public keys and therefore cannot know your balance or which transactions you have made.

To make sure that the user has the most secure version and to inform the user of any issues with the current version that is running, the application performs version checks automatically upon opening. To achieve this, the application checks the latest version number in the Gitea repository (Tor only) and compares this to the version number locally. No data is ever stored or used in any way that can identify the user or anything about them.

We cannot decrypt or otherwise access the content of your messages sent using our Soroban server. Ashigaru may briefly queue end-to-end encrypted messages on its servers for the duration of the session to ensure delivery between devices. No message history is stored.

Information we may receive and retain

We collect several types of information from and about users of our application, including information by which you may be personally identified, such as name, e-mail address, or any other identifier by which you may be contacted. We collect this information from you ONLY when you provide it to us. Personal information is received by Ashigaru in the event that you choose to provide it to us by voluntarily contacting us regarding support, or with questions or suggestions. You may optionally send us wallet error logs to help us improve the application. These error logs contain software exceptions and basic device data. You may also optionally send us wallet information for troubleshooting. You can review and make modifications to these error logs and wallet information before sending them to us, or you may choose not to send them to us at all. Any information that you provide to us will only be used for purposes of addressing your specific request.

You may register a PayNym on our directory when you create a wallet. Reusable payment codes and Bitcoin notification addresses are used to provide our services to you and other users. Popular open source projects and charities may request a custom name and avatar, otherwise these will be assigned by the server based upon our own hashing algorithm. As there is no revoking of addresses on a blockchain and this information directly aids recovery of assets, we do not delete your publicly announced information pertaining to your claimed PayNym.

How do we secure your information?

Ashigaru takes reasonable security measures such as password protection, two-factor authentication for internal logins, client-side encryption, and a whitelist of contributors who can deploy changes to our servers, as we deem appropriate to protect the information we collect from misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction.

In situations where we receive secure, authenticated communication from relevant authorities requesting disclosure of information, we will never disclose any information before we have investigated the request. The requesting party shall state the legal grounds (applicable to the Ashigaru Open Source Project) for such disclosure. After we have received the request, an investigation will take place into whether there are adequate grounds for the reasons stated. We maintain a regularly updated Warrant Canary which can be monitored for changes, expiry or takedown.

Changes to our Privacy Policy

It is our policy to post any changes we make to our Privacy Policy on this page. If we make material changes to how we treat our users' personal information, we will notify you through a notice on the application. The date the Privacy Policy was last revised is identified at the top of this document. You are responsible for periodically visiting our application and this Privacy Policy to check for any changes to our Privacy Policy.
